The acting general manager of Westmead Hospital, Rod Gilroy, said the Western Sydney Local Health District was facing harsher challenges than other hospitals. "We have seen significant increases in hospital activity over the past three years, with high incidences of chronic disease, diabetes and respiratory issues," he said, saying diabetes and respiratory issues were 10 to 20 per cent more common in the area.
